The Shadow Lady and I took a walk one evening to check the
sunset, and get some fresh air. We ended up heading
out on the I-90 floating bridge... the largest floating
concrete structure in the world.
The bridge connects Mercer Island to Seattle, eliminating
the need for a Ferry, and shortening the drive between the
cities by more than 20 miles.
The builders of the bridge added a walking/Biking path... it
makes for an interesting walk!
This is an access door down into the concrete barge's
innards.
In the 90's, during a bridge inspection, these doors were
left open overnight. That night, a huge rain storm
blew in, and the water entering through the open doors came
in faster than the pumps could pump it out... and the bridge
sank early the next morning.
We felt good knowing they were locked shut.
As the cars go by, especially the larger trucks, you can
feel the bridge bob a bit... not the funnest thing when
you're a good ways from shore!
Walking back, we headed into 'night'
This is a raft of ducks, several hundred yards from shore.
I guess they do this for safety... there's several eagles
living on the shores of Lake Washington, and I guess there's
safety in numbers.
