2006.09.11 - Doing the Urbanite Thing

After a month or so of saying I was going to, I've finally decided to start using the bus to get to work.  The savings are outweighing the convenience of having Gar with us at work.  A tank a week adds up - and fairly quickly! .  Plus, I have to pay to park at work, which isn't really all that cheap, either.  The Shadow Lady had verified the routes, schedules, and drop points a while ago, so we just needed to get started on it... My camera is on the fritz, but I had my mobile phone with me, and took some snaps of the trip.

So, this morning, instead of piling in Gar, we walked to the local bus stop, which is only a couple of blocks or so away from our place, and picked up the bus.

The sun was just coming up... its progressively getting darker in the mornings... a sure sign that the season of the Big Yellow Thing is nearly over, and the weather I've missed is returning...

There was only one other person at the bus stop... not many folks on the Island use the bus, it seems.

Of course, that could be because the Park and Ride is so tore up.  That's where our transfer was.

They're rebuilding it, turning it into a parking garage... its been closed since Spring.

The bus came just a few minutes late.  It was about half full, I'd guess.

The bus was an "express", which means it takes the direct route between park and rides and transit centers... lucky for us, our building is about half a block from one of them, so it was a short walk from there to our tower.

It was interesting to be a pedestrian as I walked past the ramps into the parking garages below the building.

Success!  Here's a shot of the tower I work in... which I took from the curb, just before heading in... Total time?  About 40 minutes... about twice what it takes to drive.

Not a bad first experience, considering some of the horror stories I've heard!

I think the scariest thing is that "Urbanite" is a word that Microsoft's Spelling Dictionary accepts as valid.

Oh... have I ever mentioned that I really like my phone?
