2006.01.01 - The Flooded Wishkah

What a difference a few hours can make!

I woke up for the first time in 2006 to a gray, rainy morning.   Not surprising, though, as I was in Grays Harbor County, after all.

I did notice the the river had dropped somewhat from the day before - not that I was worried much, because my hotel room was on the second floor.

Driving to pick up the Shadow Lady at her parents, I ran along the river, noting that the river was a couple of feet below where it had been the afternoon before, where it was just a tad below the surface of the roadway.
On the way back from church, heading back up to the Seattle Area... the tide had come in, combined with water collected during the rain in the morning, and the Wishkah came up over its banks, and flooded the roadways.

You'll notice that I'm at the same corner with the fence as the picture above, when the water was much lower.

As we got closer to Aberdeen, it was apparent that the river was not being very nice to those folks who lived in the "flood plain"...

Its going to be difficult for them to sell that house!

They closed a few of the roads, and we had to detour over a bridge, to a road on higher ground.

Its the same bridge that Kurt Cobain lived under, by the way.

As we drove out of town, the lingering views were of a very soggy city, waiting for the tide to go out.

While its supposed to continue to rain, the tides aren't supposed to be quite a high, so things are looking up for them.
