2005.12.30-31 - Ending The Year

We went to spend the Last Weekend of the year with The Shadow's Lady's family.  On the way...  well, technically farther along the road a bit, but close by, we stopped by and visited with a friend of hers.  Then it was a quick stop in Astoria, and a leisurely drive up to Grays Harbor County, and a New Year's service at the church.

It rained pretty much the whole way down, and at times traffic was a bit much.  Several routes were closed due to slides and water over the roadways, and traffic was thickening in some places.  The radio seemed to indicate that things were worse as you went south, so we decided to head off the beaten path a bit, and went "the longer way" to avoid the majority of the traffic.

That worked well, until we came to another block... It seems that WA-107 has slid down the hill about 4 miles after the junction with US-12, and will be closed "indefinitely".

That backed up traffic, because everyone had to take US 12 on into Aberdeen, and head South from the junction with US-101

We were delayed about 40 minutes by the detour, but once we got through Aberdeen, it was smooth sailing, and after a brief stop for gas, we made it just in time to see the herd of "Pet" elk that roam through their yard, checking out whatever they can that might be tasty.
After a great meal and time to catch up, we went back out on the road, and went out to the coast, hoping to go to the North Jetty at the mouth of the Columbia, but the campground there is undergoing repairs, and the road was closed... so we went to North Head instead.

In the Parking lot, an owl was checking out the area for critters foraging in the break in the rain.

It was a short walk down to the lighthouse.  There was a brisk wind, and a bit of fog.

The wind shook my tripod, which made pictures difficult, but the mist made for an excellent opportunity to catch the beams coming from the light room.

North Head is the third windiest location in the US, and it lived up to its reputation... we didn't stay too long, but we sure enjoyed the view.

The pictures, I'm afraid, don't do it justice!

The next morning, on the way back up to Gray's Harbor, we stopped in Astoria's Columbia River Maritime Museum.

The river, and the ocean it dumps into, is a major part of what shaped the city to be what it is, and the museum attempts to preserve some of that "shaping".

A commanding display is set up for the Coast Guard.  More than 2000 ships have sunk in and around the mouth of the Columbia over the years, and even today, the Coast Guard rescues more than 600 lives from the waters surrounding the river, and its world famous bar - STILL labeled the most treacherous in the world.
One of the highlights for me at the museum is the opportunity to go though the Lightship Columbia.

Once anchored at the shipping lane entrance to the mighty river, the lightship now stands as a testament to the grit it must have taken to man the sturdy, but small, ship.

After the museum, We checked out the waters that were lapping at the newly landscaped grounds of the Holiday Inn, which is at the foot of the bridge.

Then, it was over the bridge, and a short jaunt back up to Grays Harbor for the New Year's Celebration.

On the way, we stopped to take a picture of a flooded church... it was amazing!

While there, We noticed some Bald Eagles in the trees.

There were two adults, and two juveniles.  One of the adults had caught a fish, and was eating it...

It was pretty spectacular!

On the way up to Gray's Harbor, we made another detour, through Marsh's Free Museum.

Filled with curiosities like "Jake the Alligator man", and the "Rare Flying Jackalope", the museum also has a good collection of artifacts from the regions past, such as the "Indian stone war club", interesting candies, and other oddities, like the walrus skull.

Another stop for us was Clarks... which has THE BEST ice cream!!!  It was an awesome stop.

As we drove along the Wishkah, we noticed how high it was... nearly out of its banks, and only a foot or so below the level of the roadway in the lower areas.

We visited with The Shadow Lady's folks, and then went to the church for a special "In The Light" service.

The Shadow Lady's Aunt does the power point slides, and she asked me to send her some mountain scenes... it was pretty cool to see them up there!

After the service, we played board games, visited, and fellowshipped until the New Year came, where we counted down the final seconds, and prayed to give thanks for the year that had passed, and for a good year to come.

It was a great way to end the year...
