2005.12.24 - Christmas Flood Watch

Well, true to its reputation, the Pacific Northwest isn't going to have a White Christmas... but instead, we have a local Flood Watch.

And for good reason.  Its been raining pretty much steadily for a week or so, with about 1 - 1.5 inches of rain a day, covering all of the state west of the Cascade Mountains... a large area, obviously... which means LOTS of water flowing down the rivers and streams.

While most rivers are pretty well equipped to handle moving a lot of water, we're getting far more than "above average", and the ground is becoming very saturated... all of the water is run off, so the rivers are falling behind, and the water is rising in some places.

While driving down to visit the family for Christmas Eve, I came across a rest area that is about to be inundated with water, so I stopped and snapped a few pictures.

Its exhilarating to be down close to the water when its rushing past like that!

While I was there, a tree floated by under the bridge... apparently washed from its water-soaked anchorage somewhere upstream.

I was at the stop - actually a public boat launch - for only a few minutes, but the water was visibly rising in even that short of time.  Compare the picture below with the first one... a span of less than 10 minutes.
