2005.12.10 - Gloria!

I was in a Christmas Concert this weekend with the Choir at my church...  Titled Gloria, it was a Christmas Musical that had songs familiar to some, blended with songs that were written for this ensemble.

This was the first time I've ever done this sort of thing, so I was apprehensive at the start -- not to mention I can't sing very well!  But, they let me do it, and they said I sounded fine, so I must've not sounded as badly as I thought I did.  I had a lot more fun than I thought I would, and more importantly, it was an excellent opportunity to meet others in my church, and gain the fellowship I had been seeking... something we all need, I'm sure!

A lot of work went into setting up the whole thing... in the few days prior to the first concert, the sound and lighting guys set everything up, and we worked out the kinks during our rehearsals...
I got a whole new appreciation for how much effort went into the background and behind the scenes... there was a lot that went into making sure the right lights and mikes were on at the right time...

There was a lot to work out

On Friday and Saturday, the chaos of the set up gave way to the smoothness of the actual concerts...

The sanctuary was set up with tables, and desserts were served just before the program started... an excellent time to fellowship with those who came.

The Shadow Lady's Family came... it was very nice to see them again... it'd been quite a while.

My Friend Les, who actually took most of these pictures for me, came both nights, and had a great time, and even said that he might start attending... Also, two other coworkers came to see us sing, and one is coming to  services this Sunday...  An Awesome answer to prayer.

After a while, the lights dimmed, and the narrators got things started.  They did an amazing job!

The first night, the lights were late on our director, Pastor Jim... we got underway OK, but I couldn't see him at all.  That glitch was fixed, and like at NASA... once the first glitch is passed, things go better after that.

I was very nervous... they put me on the end of the Tenor Row... I joked that it was so I wouldn't mess too many people up!

The ladies in front of me said that I did fine, and were glad that I was singing, which I thought was very nice.

After our opening song, there was a comical skit about traveling to Bethlehem to pay taxes... "Did you hear about the tax rebel Timus Eimanus?"... too funny!

Those guys did a fantastic job... it was awesome watching them do their skit and singing!

The duet setting up the moments prior to Jesus' birth was very impressive, and very well done!

Trust God's plan... the song had a great message that extended far beyond Christmas, that's for sure!

We sang some carols, and Pastor Jim got up with us, and directed the crowd a bit to sing along with us... that was my favorite part, I think... There was a lot of energy in the room.
The children's Choir did a great job... they were a joy to watch, and they sounded very good.  It was fun singing with them!

The energy that some of them put into the songs was inspiring... its sad that some of us lose that ability to fully apply ourselves like that...

Both nights, as we sang, the flow and the energy was quite amazing... Pastor Jim mentioned how the ensemble would flow and tell a story that was quite powerful, but I guess I didn't "get it" until we put it all together...

It was quite amazing.

There were two soloists... they both sang incredible songs I hadn't heard before, "Mary did you Know" really touched me... The boy you delivered will one day deliver you... When you kiss the face of your baby, you kiss the face of God... what a powerful song!

"Bethlehem Star" was very well done... the star showed the way to the One who will show the way to salvation...

There was an excellent trio singing "Oh Holy Night", and the duet was truly amazing... Asking Jesus to return.... not as a baby, but as our King... another song that extended the Christmas Story beyond where it normally seems to be emphasized.
Right before the last song, Pastor Greg gave us a brief Christmas Message...

He's been our pastor since September.  I think things have certainly taken a turn for the better since he's been our Shepherd.

We ended with an upbeat song, with the theme of taking the incredible joy of the Christmas Story from where we were singing, and remembering it throughout the year...

It was an awesome experience, and I'm very glad I did it...
