2005.10.29 - Promise Keepers 2005 - 'Awakening'
< Back to Currently

I went to Promise Keepers with about 40 other men from our church.

It was awesome!

I'd seen PK in the news over the years... especially the "Million Man" Meeting in Washington DC... I've wanted to go, but never had the opportunity until this year.

An assembly of Men, worshipping God, talking about issues that Christian Men face, providing fellowship with other believers, and a reassurance that displaying a love for God is not a sign of weakness.  A weekend of reinforcing Christian values, reinforcing the importance of Integrity, Honor, Character, and our responsibility as Men in the Family... it was quite incredible!   I KNOW I am a better man for having gone.

We got there an hour before the start, and weren't even CLOSE to being the first ones at the Tacoma Dome... it was as full as the Dome could get, which was very heartwarming!
Inside, 5,000 men raised their voices in praise to God it got under way.

The focus was "Awakening"... awakening in the sense that we need to be awakened to the trials and the pressures and the problems in US that have been creeping up on us...

Each session started out with about 45 minutes of worship.  The singing was amazing!  They'd get us going with the band, then they'd stop playing sometimes, and all of us would sing - Here's a video... (~7mb: right-click and pick "Save As", and run it from your computer for best results) - It was quite spectacular.
We sang "Blessed be the Name of the Lord" for 20 minutes... In another session it was "He Reigns"... in another it was "Great is thy Faithfulness" (the clip is from that one)

It was incredible!

They also did "guy" things... threw free stuff into the crowd (they had a massive slingshot that they could reach the very back of the stadium with)(, had skits, a comedian came out and lightened things up while sort of preaching at the same time... it was good!

The preaching was outstanding, too.  It was based around "the Epic Story" of the life of Men...

The Battle for a mans Soul; the Battle for a man's Heart; Hearing from God; Discover your unique design; You have what it takes, so use it; The Epic Battle for a Mans Home, The Epic Battle for a Mans Work.

The topics focused on the challenge, and gave us Biblical reference, and personal examples for what we must, as men, ensure we do.

At then end, during the final prayer, instead of lighting candles to signify our light shinning, we turned on our cell phones... it was pretty awesome to see all the lights, mine among the many.

In all, I feel I'm not the same person I would have been if I didn't go.  The worship, the fellowship, and the preaching... I can hardly wait for next year!
