2005.10.09 - Helping Out at the Portland Marathon
< Back to Currently

The Shadow Lady's sister ran in the Portland Marathon... we helped out with additional water, food, and "Goo" stations, and we cheered her on... She'd been training for close to a year, and during the longer runs, she had called for water or a cut up protein bar for food... So, we joined her mom, dad, cousin and younger sister down in Portland to ensure we had good coverage on the course.

It had been raining the night before the race, but when we got up early that morning to get down to the first "Checkpoint", it was cool, but nice.

It wasn't nearly as crowded as we thought it would be, so we walked down to a spot where we would see her run by at about mile 2.5...

The lead group passed by at a pretty amazing clip...

Our "Checkpoint" was just past Mile 4... she was happy to see us!

The shadow lady ran with her for a bit, delivering the water, chatting, and giving encouragement.

After that, we walked the mile or so back to my truck, and continued on to the next point, which was at Mile 8.

It was amazing to see all those runners stream by... some 15,000 people ran in the race!

At Mile 8/10, it was a bit more accessible, and since it was an "out and back" portion, you got to see them twice, so there were quite a few people there.

By mile 14, the field had spread out, and it was an easier location to park, so there were people there, but it was easy to find the person you wanted, and to give them food and water...

Her leg was hurting, so we decided to change plans and follow her along the course...

At mile 15 or so, at the start of the St John's Bridge, we dug out some Tylenol for her... The shadow lady ran across the bridge with her, too.

After the race, she didn't remember the cheerleaders at the end of the bridge...

We would drive ahead of where she was, quickly park, then meet her along the course, offering water, food, or whatever...

It was find finding the way to the next place to meet her... a guy ran in a kilt, and was just ahead of her, so we used him as the marker... even the guy at the top of the last hill, who cheered on the runners, got a laugh...

She finished the race, and after a bit to rest up, we met her at IHOP with her Mom, Dad, and younger sister... We all had a good time, and by the look on her face, I have no doubt that she was glad that the race, and the training for it, was over!

Her last words about it?  "On to Paris!"
