HOCKEY IS BACK!!!

I went to the home opener for the Seattle Thunderbird's "New Generation" Season... Lots of new faces, a much younger team overall, and the will to repeat as US Division Champion, which they won last season.

As usual, I drove over the 520 Bridge to get to the game... but the trip this time was anything but "usual".  There were some incredible storm cells all around the area... we're not known for 'organized' storms -- it's usually lots of rain, and not much else.

Today, though, we had thunder, lightening, squall lines, and picture-perfect Cumulonimbus action.

NICE!

We also had a wreck on the ramp... I guess it's been nice for so long that folks forgot how to drive in the rain!

When we got to Key Arena, the fountain was closed for cleaning until October 7th... and, the lower bowl of the Arena was flooded.  Leaves and whatnot had clogged the drain, and a storm cell passed over, and dumped a good load of water - which made a mess of things!
The ice, though, looked NICE.

More ads this year, it seems.  sort of an odd arrangement, too, I think.

The "future t-birds" from Sno-King raised the 2004 Banner, and the team was announced, then the US Air Force Reserve color guard came out and we all sang the anthems to Canada, and the USA...

Hockey was starting, and it was GREAT.

The puck dropped, and the season got undeway!

The first shot on goal happened in 51 seconds, and it resulted in a T-Bird score!

Awesome.

Hockey was back, and it was GOOD!

The game was pretty good... Tied for most of it, which is always exciting.

I missed the sunroof by a mile... the first one in each game gets to try for a key at the end of the season...

The game play wasn't the greatest, but they'll tighten up as the season goes on, I'm sure... It was fun, though!

They took it into the third with the T-Birds up 2-1...

At the end of the period, the Kamloops Blazers pulled their goalie...

unfortunately it worked -- with 20 seconds left, they scored the tying goal.

Fortunately, they changed the rules this year... no more ties.  On a tie in regulation, each team gets a point, and they play a 5 minute period, 4 on 4, just like last year.

This year, though, if its a tie after that, then it goes to the Shoot out.  3 players each try to score, then it goes to "Sudden death shootout".

It ended up that the Blazers were up after the first three, so that ended it.  They got the extra point, and the game ended with a score of 3-2 (OT).

Hockey is back, and it is AWESOME.

On the way out, the Needle called to me, and I had to take the picture...

The clouds made for a great backdrop, and the leave made for a interesting frame...  I blurred it a bit, but you get the idea.
