2005.09.17 - Rainiers Championship Game
< Back to Currently

The Tacoma Rainiers, the 2005 Pacific Coast League Champions, played for the AAA Championship against the Nashville Sounds.

It had rained all day, but when game time came, it was nice... cool and cloudy, but the field had time to dry out real well, and it was a great day for September Baseball.

Nashville had a 2-0 lead in the best of 5 series... it was do or die time.

We got there a bit earlier than we normally do... We usually have difficulty getting away from work when we'd planned to, but we managed to "escape" on time... since it would be the last game of the year for us in Cheney Stadium, we walked around, and I even sat with Cheney himself... In one of the seats is a statue of the man for whom the Stadium is named.

Apparently, he was a big fan of the game...  They've left the original seats in that section... they're the same style as you find in Fenway Park... A lady pointed out that they're the best in the house, because they don't flip up and ding your backside when you stand up.

I didn't realize that that was a problem, actually.

Both teams were called out on the field... then they did the moment of silence thing for the Katrina victims, and the National Anthem...
Jeff Haverlo came in to pitch for part of an inning... in a round-about way, there's a connection between him and the Shadow Lady's sister...

It really looked for a while that the Rainiers were going to pull off a win... they had the tie going into the 9th...  The Sounds were held to no runs, even though they had the bases loaded. With the score tied...

... out came the rally caps!

The Rainiers scored the run they needed to tie up the game, and we got some Free Baseball...

There were some interesting attempts at creative base running, lots of bunt attempts, and some heavy swinging but the pitchers held on until the 13th Inning, when an errant throw to first - which would have made it by a country mile -- gave the Nashville Sounds that dreaded extra out...

3 runs scored when the next guy up to bat belted one over the Tacoma Rainiers Sign in the outfield... no small task!

The Rainiers couldn't respond, and unfortunately, the ball game ended with the score of 3-5, and the Rainiers Season ended.

It was a VERY good season for the Rainiers, though -- even will all the players the M's called up!

As down as the Rainiers were... we applauded the champion Nashville team as they celebrated their win.

It was an excellent game... and the Rainiers played very well until the very end.  You can't ask for more than that.

We left the stadium as the fireworks began... it was almost midnight by the time we left the parking lot.

It had been a good season, and we managed to make it down there for a few games...

We'll be back next season, I'm sure... we're already making plans!
