2005.09.14 - Captain Mercury goes to Safeco Field

Don, a friend of mine at work, has a "Captain Mercury" man in his cube.  He got it as a prize in a contest.  Periodically, I've taken the captain on a trip, and took pictures -- sort of like the "Traveling Gnome"...  We (the Shadow Lady and I) 'borrowed' the Captain to take him camping with us over Labor Day, but accidentally left him behind.  So, we took him to the next game in our season ticket series... the last game with the Angels at home.  The M's had won the first two games, and had the first opportunity to pull off a three game sweep against the number one team in the AL West...

We expected a great game... and got that, plus a whole lot more!

Dear Don,

Sorry I haven't been around much lately, but when Jim asked if I would go with him, I jumped at the opportunity!  I don't get the chance to get out much any more, and staring at the cube walls all day and night has gotten boring -- I need a break!  I hope you didn't worry too much.

My trip started in Jim's cube, where we waited for "The Shadow Lady" to break away from a meeting.

When she got done, we hightailed it outta there, stopped briefly for a look at the building, and then headed across the floating bridge into SODO-land...

Traffic was next to nothing, especially considering that a game was on, and it was during the daylight!  In no time at all, we were at Safeco Field.

We found parking easily enough in the Safeco Field Parking Garage... we even parked next to a Safeco Insurance Company Car... imagine the odds!

I stopped by the "Wall of Fame" in the Terrace Club walkway to take some pictures of the old King Dome... I loved that place -- it went well with my hat!

While I was posing for pictures in front of one of the happier moments in the history of the Mariners...

...Shannon Drayer noticed me and came up to ask me a few questions about what I thought of the game, my thoughts on how the American League Wildcard was going to shake out, especially with the Yankees NOT currently in the running... you know, normal baseball type stuff.

We had some time, so she offered to give me quick sneak peek at the dugout...

Once down there, Shortstop Mike Morse jumped at the chance to pose with me... I haven't been out much lately, but I guess I'm still as famous as ever... humor the rookies, I always say!

Mike came to the M's with the Garcia trade, and was largely overlooked... not any more, though!  He seems to be the cream of the crop as far as the gains from the trade goes... he's awesome.

The Moose caught wind that I was down there, and also wanted to pose with me... It was the least I could do!

After that, the Moose stole Shannon's mike, and had fun with that for a while...

Once she got her equipment back, Jim talked with the folks up in the booth, and asked Mike Blowers a question as one of the "fans at the game"...

After talking with us, Mike Blowers wanted a picture, so Shannon brought us up to the booth for a photo op...

Then, as if all THAT wasn't enough, Shannon brought us in to the KOMO broadcast booth to make sure Rick Rizzs and Dave Henderson weren't left out...

EVERYONE, it seemed, wanted to pose with "The Captain".  They were nice folks, that's for sure.

It felt good being out and about with the "people" again... it'd been a long time.  You forget how that feels sometimes, you know?

We thanked Shannon, who was especially nice, and very pleasant to talk with, for a great time.

Once the pre-game festivities were over, we got something to eat.

Had to have a hot dog... it IS baseball, after all!

Jim and the Shadow Lady have partial-season tickets in the Terrace Club... its a nice place to watch the game from... a great vantage point, shelter if its cooler, nice seats if its nice, good food, Fox Sports Network Monitors for instant replays, and KOMO 1000's broadcast over the speakers... you can really enjoy the game there!

The game started off VERY well for the M's... 3 runs in each of the first two innings!

Very nice!

In the third, though, they got to Jamie a bit, and closed the gap up a bit by scoring 4 runs...

Ed, the Safeco Field Security guy for our section, also posed with me.

Ed is a very nice guy... always courteous and pleasant, and a total M's fan!  He adds a lot to the games, that's for sure!

After taking a picture of me with the KOMO 1000 sign, we decided to take a walk around Safeco Field, and check out the views from the various areas around the great baseball park.

We already have reserved tickets for next year's season in the Terrace Club... but we thought we'd go look anyway.

We took pictures all over the stadium... it was fun!

At "The Hot Stove Grill", the crew caught on that I was "The Captain", so they wanted to pose with me, too...

We were watching the game, too, of course... there were runs and hits galore!  The Angels would get back in the game, and the M's would increase the lead... it was quite exciting!

On the way back to our seats, we watched JJ Putz warm up for a bit...that guy can sure throw!

Putz finished out the game, until the 9th, when Every Day Eddie came in to finish it out.

Eddie ended up letting the Angels tie up the game... but it didn't matter, becuse in the 9th, the M's scored, and walked off with the win!  It was a wild one!  31 hits!

In all, it was one of those magical days that you can only have at a baseball park.

I can hardly wait for the next trip I get to take with them!

Captain Mercury.
