We didn't have anything planned, so decided to take advantage of
some down time, and went for a drive through the Cascade Loop. Driving into the Cascades is always fun for me... and when there's low clouds, then the hills take on a whole new character... its quite pleasant. I really enjoy how it looks when the trees disappear into the foggy undersides of the clouds... |

We decided to stretch out a bit at an obscure exit, and ended
up "discovering" Lake Easton State Park, which really seemed
like a nice place to visit... That's one of the things I
really like about just driving without a timeline or hard
destination... the discovery. There's more pictures of the park on the Lake Easton State Park page. |

Not far up the Interstate From Lake Easton, the Loop turned towards
Leavenworth, to the North, and before too long we found ourselves in the
town of Liberty, which has a Snowmobile speed limit of 25 miles per hour
down its main street. Liberty is one of the old mining towns in the state that managed to remain a mining town -- there's enough in the mines to keep people interested, but not so much that more businesses move in and spoil the place... its basically a ghost town, a shell of its former boom days... it was an awesome stop! See more of the history on the Liberty Web Page. |

From Liberty to Leavenworth, we were driving in the Rain
Shadow of the Cascades. Eastern Washington is quite a
bit warmer and more arid than is the area to the West of the
Cascade Range... different trees, different grass, different
smells, its a whole different environment...
Check out the pictures up above, at the top of this page... more green, more clouds, different weather... and that's not all that far away from where these here were taken...

We hit Leavenworth in time for dinner... we walked around town for a
while, enjoying the Bavarian Theme (complete with a really nice Fest
Pole), and checking out the shops... the Kris Kringl store is a year-round
Christmas store... the selection of Nut Crackers is quite spectacular!
There's more pictures and information on the Leavenworth Web Page... After shopping for a while, we ate some awesome authentic German food (the ingredients are FROM Germany, even), which took up the rest of the daylight... |
