2005.06.11 - An Evening with the Tacoma Rainiers
< Back to Currently

On Saturday, the 'Shadow Lady' and I went to a Tacoma Rainier's game on an invite by a co-worker friend of ours, along with his wife and 3 great kids, all fellow fans of THE GAME... It was destined to be a great night!

The Rainiers are a AAA team, a farm club of the Seattle Mariners.  They play in Cheney Stadium, which is one of those places where baseball just feels "right"... its a great small baseball stadium where there's not a bad seat in the house, and you can REALLY get down close to the game, no matter where you sit...

There's a feeling you get from the park that just doesn't come through at the 'big league' park... these guys are the stars of tomorrow, and they're all trying to make a name for themselves... they play with more heart, but sometimes with less talent, which makes for a much better game.

The 'entertainment' is better, too... it was "Spiderman Day", so the wall crawler had the honors of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

Baseball, outdoors, with friends... you'd be hard-pressed to have more fun on a Saturday evening, to be sure!

The weather made for some impressive scenery as the sun was setting... it didn't rain on us, but you could see some pretty dark clouds all around the park.

Baseball under the lights... awesome.

It was a good game... it went back and forth, and for the most part, there weren't too many errors.

I had a good time at the game... the 'Shadow Lady' even managed to get a picture of me... for a guy who takes a lot of pictures, I'm not too fond of getting in front of the lens...

Every game has the "one play"... this game was no different.

In the bottom of the 8th, Olivo, the Rainier's Catcher (who played for a month or so with the Mariners earlier in the season) stroked a line drive that dribbled past the center fielder, and rolled to the wall.  The runners on first and second bolted home, and as Olivo closed on third, the coach gave him the "go" wave, and Olivo headed towards home just as the throw was coming in.

Olivo crashed head first into the catcher, which knocked the ball loose.  Its not often you see an inside-the-park home run... and the way it ended was EXCELLENT!!!

The Rainiers won the game, 7-4.

After the game, the kids got to run the bases... my friend ran them with his son - the perfect ending to a great evening of Baseball.
