2005.04.08 - Wildlife Refuge
< Back to Currently

At the mouth of the Nisqually River lies a Wildlife Refuge run jointly by the State Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Nisqually Indian Tribe.

It was along the banks of the river in this Refuge where the Nisqually signed their treaty with the US Government, allowing the settlement of the region.

Now, the refuge is home to several species of birds, and is a safe haven for the migratory birds looking for a rest.

Part of the park is an old farm, which provides ample flat, grassy land, the environment for resting Canadian Geese, heading North... Some geese simply remain in the park for the summer, and take to the various ponds and begin nesting.
There are birds of all sorts.

The refuge is the perfect place to go to spend some quiet time, and take some pictures...  Where else are you going to see a goose in a tree???
