After working until 2:30 AM or so the night before, A friend and I
decided that we should take the opportunity to get some f our time back,
and so we took a half day on a Monday, and went to The Mountain. The
first stop on the way was, of course, the truck.
This truck was damaged during the mudflows shortly after the
eruption. Massive amounts of debris tore down the Toutle River
valley, causing damage to everything in its path. This truck is
but one example. |

This is the famous "KOMO" car. The reporter who
abandoned this car videotaped his ordeal while walking out
of the blast area after the ash had choked out his engine.
The car shows up in several documentaries and movies about
the eruption. I found it several years ago, tucked
away in a hidden "locals only" spot. The camper is another
icon of the documentary circuit. Its occupants
unfortunately chose "that" weekend to go camping in the lush
Toutle Valley...
When you cross the picturesque Hofstadt River Bridge, you
enter the Blast Zone - the region immediately and forever
changed by the blast. |
