Events of 2005

2005 was a GREAT year for me.  It will forever be the year I met The Shadow Lady.

It started in turmoil, but quickly recovered, and by the time "The Ferry Ride" happened in February, I knew it was going to be a good year!  The waterfront walk in Seattle, The Ferry Ride, the first trip to Mt St Helens, Opening Day at Safeco, the San Diego Trip, The CVO Tour, Memorial Day, The visit to Westport, The Maine Trip, Labor Day, The day with Captain Mercury in Safeco Field, DC Talk, the walk on Queen Anne, Dan's Last game, Promise Keepers, Thanksgiving, the Choir, and the year end weekend "road trip without a plan"...  There's lots to remember from this year!

It was a good year, and I'm SO looking forward to next year!

Click on the link that comes after the blurb for more details.

2005.12.30-31 - Ending the Year
We went to spend the Last Weekend of the year with The Shadow's Lady's family.  On the way...  well, technically farther along the road a bit, but close by, we stopped by and visited with a friend of hers.  Then it was a quick stop in Astoria, and a leisurely drive up to Grays Harbor County, and a New Year's service at the church.

Ending The Year

2005.12.27 - A walk in Soggy Marymoor Park
Its been raining here in the Pacific North West.  I can almost hear you saying, "Duh,  It's winter in the North West... what'd you expect?"  Well, that's true enough... but normally, its drizzly, misty, and gray, with a shower of "real" rain thrown in now and again.  But this year, at least these last few weeks, its been outright RAIN coming down... that's a bit different for us.

Anyway, the Shadow Lady and I took advantage of a break in the liquid sunshine, and went for a walk after grabbing a sandwich at Subway.

A walk in Soggy Marymoor Park

2005.12.25 - Christmas
Christmas Day began with me heading over to the Shadow Lady's house to pick her up to go to church.  Her sister had the opportunity to lead the worship at her Church, so we went to her church rather than ours.

The Sunday Church service was an excellent opportunity to worship, give praise and thanks for the Ultimate Gift that He gave to us... on the very day we celebrate that Gift!

Christmas

2005.12.24 - Christmas Eve
I went with the Shadow Lady and her family to the 'family Christmas parties'... it was my first opportunity to meet those on her dad's side, and a great opportunity to visit with those on her mom's side, whom I've had the opportunity to become fairly familiar with.

Christmas Eve

2005.12.24 - Christmas Flood Watch
Well, true to its reputation, the Pacific Northwest isn't going to have a White Christmas... but instead, we have a local Flood Watch.

And for good reason.  Its been raining pretty much steadily for a week or so, with about 1 - 1.5 inches of rain a day, covering all of the state west of the Cascade Mountains... a large area, obviously... which means LOTS of water flowing down the rivers and streams.

Christmas Flood Watch

2005.12.18 - Along the Parade of Lights
We went down to the Shadow Lady's home town, and she showed me around... its amazing!  They do a parade of lights every year, and we drove along the route of the parade... nearly every home is decorated along the route -- even the county courthouse - its spectacular!

Along the Parade of Lights

2005.12.15 - The Sonics face Yao and the Rockets
The Shadow Lady's friend (the same one that joined us at the hockey game and volley ball game) invited us to a Sonics game.  A friend of hers had some extra tickets, and we got to sit in VERY nice seats!  It was a great way to spend an evening

The Sonics face Yao

2005.12.10 - Gloria! Christmas Choir
I was in a Christmas Concert this weekend with the Choir at my church...  Titled Gloria, it was a Christmas Musical that had songs familiar to some, blended with songs that were written for this ensemble.

This was the first time I've ever done this sort of thing, so I was apprehensive at the start -- not to mention I can't sing very well!  But, they let me do it, and they said I sounded fine, so I must've not sounded as badly as I thought I did.

Gloria! Christmas Choir

2005.11.25 - Alpine Drive
We had the day off, as most do on the Friday after Thanksgiving and, having no desire to join the masses in what is typically the second-most active shopping day of the year - did you hear about the lady who got trampled entering a Wal-Mart? - so we went for a drive up into the mountains...

Alpine Drive

2005.11.24 - Thanksgiving 2005
The Shadow Lady was 'babysitting' a house and a dog for a friend of hers.  She had the "OK" to invite folks over for Thanksgiving, and happily I was on the list... I was even more happy to learn that I was going to be able to cook.

Thanksgiving 2005

2005.11.23 - Traffic Blessing
We, (the Shadow Lady and I) were driving into Seattle.  Being so close to the holidays, the commute was TERRIBLE.

But, as it sometimes goes, we were blessed with an amazing sunset, and because the traffic was so slow, we managed to enjoy a view that we might otherwise have only gotten a glance at, or missed altogether.

When A busy highway is a blessing

2005.11.07 - Sunrise in Bellevue
The weather around here is "Winter", which most of the time means "Rain", but there are days when the skies part, and we are treated with some fantastic sunrises!

My cube doesn't have a view, but sometimes I remember to check out how the sunrise is coming along... today, I hit the Jackpot!

Sunrise in Bellevue

2005.11.04 - Friday Night Volleyball
The Washington Husky Girls Volleyball Team is ranked 2nd in the nation.  They played host to the Bears from California, who were ranked 10th.  I don't know a whole lot about Volleyball, and what rules I thought I knew changed, so I knew even less than I thought I did... but, I had a great time!

Friday Night Volleyball

2005.11.04 - Capital Tour
I went back down to Olympia for a meeting, and since I had some time to kill afterwards, while the Shadow Lady did some errands, I walked up to the Capital Complex, and took some pictures.

Capital Tour

2005.10.31 - Because she's Awesome!
I sent The Shadow Lady some flowers, something I hadn't done in quite some time, just to let her know how awesome she is...

Because she's awesome!

2005.10.29 - Promise Keepers 2005
I went to Promise Keepers with about 40 other men from our church.  An assembly of Men, worshipping God, talking about issues that Christian Men face, providing fellowship with other believers, and a reassurance that displaying a love for God is not a sign of weakness.  A weekend of reinforcing Christian values, reinforcing the importance of Integrity, Honor, Character, and our responsibility as Men in the Family... it was quite incredible!   I KNOW I am a better man for having gone.

Promise Keepers 2005 - 'Awakening'

2005.10.25 - Above the Fog
The first day I started working in the new building, I thought that once fall came, and the fog rolled in, there would be opportunity for pictures...

It seems I was right.

Above the Fog

2005.10.23 - Along the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah
The Shadow Lady went down to her hometown church to sing in their "In the Light" worship service.  Its a once-a-month service with the cousins filled with prayer, Bible-reading, and worship in song.  It's quite amazing, actually... I've gone nearly every month since we've known each other.

Along the muddy banks of the Wishkah

2005.10.22 - A trip across the Tacoma Narrows
I had a meeting in Gig Harbor, so I had the opportunity to drive over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.  I hadn't done that in quite some time, so I was looking forward to seeing how far they'd come on the construction of the new bridge.

The existing bridge is still known as "Galloping Gertie", a reference to the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which collapsed less than a year after its completion due to high winds

A drive over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge

2005.10.21 - Down to Olympia
I had an appointment down in Olympia, so I used my "9/80" day to go down there.

It was a VERY nice day... light clouds, blue sky, warm, light breeze... it was an outstanding day, especially for October.

Down to Olympia

2005.10.20 - A Striking Sunrise
This is the half of the year where I typically come to work when its dark, and then leave for home when its dark.  Some days, I end up not seeing the sun - or daylight - at all.

This morning, though, I got held up on the way in, and when I went to get coffee and sit and chat with Jerry and Don, friends of mine at work, I managed to catch this incredible sunrise...

A Striking Sunrise

2005.10.16 - Issaquah Salmon Run
No matter how many times I see it, I'm amazed that the salmon return year after year, and struggle so mightily to get up the river, and return to their home: the hatchery.  Its so incredible and so mind boggling!  Especially when you remember that its all based on smell.  They follow the sent trail of the stream back to where they were born -- its just incredible.

A Look at the Issaquah Salmon Run

2005.10.15 - T-Birds Vs Blades
The Saskatoon Blades came to town, and we went to watch.  It ends up being the only meeting this season between Saskatoon and Seattle.

T-Birds Vs Blades

2005.10.14 - A Friday IMAX Movie
The Shadow Lady went to a volleyball game with a friend of hers, so I rounded up  Les, and we went to an IMAX movie, "Walking on the Moon", a 3D movie trying to convince folks we've been there (Yep, I'm one of the disbelievers), and get people charged up about going back.

IMAX Movie

2005.10.10 - Mt St Helens - Windy Ridge
On the way back from a trip to help out at the Portland Marathon, we decided to take a detour and head out The Mountain.  Since I had never been to Windy Ridge, we decided to go that way.

I've been to Mt St Helens MANY times, but I've always gone "the other" way, to Johnston's Ridge.  This was going to be a rare opportunity to do something completely different a place I've been to many times.

Mt St Helens - Windy Ridge

2005.10.09 - Helping Out at the Portland Marathon
The Shadow Lady's sister ran in the Portland Marathon... we helped out with additional water, food, and "Goo" stations, and we cheered her on... She'd been training for close to a year, and during the longer runs, she had called for water or a cut up protein bar for food... So, we joined her mom, dad, cousin and younger sister down in Portland to ensure we had good coverage on the course.

Helping Out at the Portland Marathon

2005.10.08 - T-Birds Visit Portland
Down in Portland already to cheer on The Shadow Lady's Sister in the Portland Marathon, we decided to go see the Seattle Thunderbirds play against the Portland Winter Hawks.  By a stroke of luck, they were in town the same night we were looking for something to do.

T-Birds at Portland

2005.10.01 - Thunderbird's Home Opener
HOCKEY IS BACK!!!

I went to the home opener for the Seattle Thunderbird's "New Generation" Season... Lots of new faces, a much younger team overall, and the will to repeat as US Division Champion, which they won last season.  A bit of weirdness at the start, new rules, and we lost, but HOCKEY IS BACK!

Thunderbird's Home Opener

2005.09.30 - Dan's Last Game
On the way home from work on Thursday, I heard that Dan Wilson, the venerated catcher, and the favorite player of many a Mariner's fan, was going to be able to catch the first inning of the "Fan Appreciation Game".  He would then walk off the field, and retire.  For the first time since he came to the M's in 1994, there would be no Dan Wilson on the roster.

Dan's Last Game

2005.09.28 - Misty Sunrise
With the arrival of Fall, the weather patterns have shifted, and the "Marine Layer" is back.  Most mornings, even on days, such as this one, that are going to end up with clear blue skies start out as a foggy day.  The sunrise is right about the same time I've been getting to work, and when the day starts out like this, you just KNOW that its going to be a great day!

Misty Sunrise

2005.09.27 - Our Last Game of the 2005 Season
We bought a pair of 16-game pack tickets at the beginning of the season, and actually made it to most of them, plus a couple of others.  The one's we didn't go to, we gave to the shadow lady's sisters, so we got our worth out of them.  But, everything comes to an end (well, except God, and our soul's eternity, of course), and we had come to the last game in our pack.

Our Last Game of the 2005 Season

2005.09.26 - A walk along Queen Anne Hill
We worked late one Monday, and on the way home, we were marveling at the Sunset, so I decided to drive across the bridge into Seattle, to try and catch a good view of the Seattle Skyline from the Kerry Park Viewpoint, on Queen Anne Hill.  We walked down the street along the crest of Queen Anne Hill, to another park, Marshall Park, and the Betty Bowen Viewpoint.  It was just a time to get out, walk around for a bit, and enjoy each other's company before ending a long day at work.

It was Awesome.

A walk along Queen Anne Hill

2005.09.25 - Downsizing my Wheels
I pulled into a gas station, because my "Low Fuel" light came on...  I had traveled a measly 261 miles, and since the light was on, I was about to add 22.5 gallons or so into my truck... I had just gotten fuel on the 23rd.  I stopped the pump at just over $30, and headed for the Bellevue Lincoln Mercury Dealer...

It was decided.

My truck, with its 95,656 miles, and 15 MPG average on the Highway, was going to be retired.

Downsizing my Wheels

2005.09.24 - Just a "sMac" of DC Talk
The Shadow Lady came up with some tickets to Toby Mac, who was the 'lead', if you will, of DC Talk, a Christian Contemporary group that broke up 3 years ago.  We found out afterwards that Kevin Max and Michael Tait, the other two members of the group, were going to be singing also, albeit separately... The three had not been in the same place at the same time since they split the group up.  It seemed that things were going to be awesome!

Just a "sMac" of DC Talk

2005.09.17 - AAA Championship Game
The Tacoma Rainiers, the 2005 Pacific Coast League Champions, played for the AAA Championship against the Nashville Sounds.

It had rained all day, but when game time came, it was nice... cool and cloudy, but the field had time to dry out real well, and it was a great day for September Baseball.

Nashville had a 2-0 lead in the best of 5 series... it was do or die time.

Rainiers Championship Game

2005.09.16 - Awesome Sunrises
We've had some pretty amazing Sunrises as the summer is ending... God's paintbrush has been busy.  Its been a joy driving to work, because the view is so spectacular!

We won't have many more for a while... winter is upon us, and these last blasts of summer sunrises have to be enjoyed... on days like these, that's pretty easy to do!

Awesome Sunrises

2005.09.14 - Captain Mercury goes to Safeco Field
We (the Shadow Lady and I) 'borrowed' the Captain to take him camping with us over Labor Day, but accidentally left him behind.  So, we took him to the next game in our season ticket series... the last game with the Angels at home.  The M's had won the first two games, and had the first opportunity to pull off a three game sweep against the number one team in the AL West...

We expected a great game... and got that, plus a whole lot more!

Captain Mercury goes to Safeco Field

September 13, 2005 - Misty Morning
Shortly after arriving at work this morning, I noticed that we were above the fog that I drove through on the way to work.  I enjoy fog, and the calming effect it has on everything... it was a nice drive in.  The view from above, though, really made things look awesome!

Misty Morning

September 10, 2005 - Baseball in September
It was a bit chilly, and the Mariners ended up losing in a sadly lethargic showing, but it was baseball, outside, on a Saturday evening... and to top it off, the Shadow Lady was there with me, and we had a great evening!

September Baseball

September 4-5, 2005 - Labor Day Weekend
I spent Labor Day Weekend with the Shadow Lady and her family, and had a great time. I got to meet more of her family, and got to know the rest better.

Labor Day Weekend

September 2, 2005 - Last Friday Game of the Season
After a long week, we decided to end it by going to a Tacoma Rainier's game... it was the last Friday game of the season, and the birthday of a friend of ours, AND another friend was bringing his family... how could we NOT go?

The Last Friday Game of the Season

August 27, 2005 - Wedding Bells
The Shadow Lady and I went to a wedding... Sally, the lady who was the ringleader vandalizing my cube not long ago, invited us to her wedding...

August 26, 2005 - Fingerlings in Olympia
I had to go to Olympia to take care of some loose ends, and stopped by the 4th avenue bridge, and the Capital Lake Dam, to see if any Salmon were running yet.  Salmon were running, but not in the direction I was expecting to see...

Fingerlings in Olympia

August 26, 2005 - A Sunrise at Mount St Helens
I actually had a day off.  And... it was supposed to be nice in Toutle for the early morning hours.

The stage was set... I got up at 1:45 AM, did a quick peek at the CVO Mt St Helens Volcano Cam, and then loaded up my camera gear, and took a trek to The Mountain.

August 25, 2005 - Yet ANOTHER Fire Drill
We had ANOTHER 'safety' day... to be fair, though, it was the first one in our new building...

August 17, 2005 - Another Trip around the Sun
I lost any notion of a quiet birthday at work when I stepped off the Elevator...

August 13, 2005 - An Awesome Sunset
After joining the clean-up party at the church, we decided to take a drive in my truck, and take advantage of the air conditioning... we drove up to Chinook Pass, near Mt Rainier, to go for a walk, and to see if we couldn't take in an excellent sunset.

A Sunset at Rainier

August 8, 2005 - Out for a walk in Bellevue
We ended up having to work on a weekend, so on Sunday afternoon, when we were through, we went for a walk in downtown Bellevue, and saw some amazing scenery, surprisingly enough.

Out for a walk in Bellevue

August 9, 2005 - Baseball in August
The next ticket in our Game Pack treated us to a look at the newest arrival from Tacoma: Victor Hernandez, the 19 year old fast-baller who created a complete sensation when he arrived in the Bigs... It was a GREAT evening!  Mid 70's, no humidity, not a cloud to speak of...

A Perfect Day for Baseball

August 6, 2005 - My First Pictures... ever!
My mom got me a camera for my 7th birthday... I immediately ran outside and took pictures of construction going on along my street.

I still have those pictures, and while its not "current", I did just scan them and put them up on my site, so I'm putting a link to them here...

August 5, 2005 - Angelic Practice Session
The Blue Angels flew in to town, for the Sea Fair boat race and Air Show.  On Friday, I had the opportunity to watch them make their practice runs from the 15th Floor of the Symetra Financial Center.

Blue Angels Practice Session

July 28, 2005 - August under the lights
My friend Jerry couldn't use a set of tickets to the Tacoma Rainiers he had come across, so he gave them to me... I invited another friend, John, and his wife to the game, and they came...  AAA ball, under the lights, in August... doesn't get much better than that on a week night, that's for sure!

July 22, 2005 - A Country Drive in the Cascades
Freshly back from Maine, we continued our vacation with a nice drive up into the Cascades... No destination, no timeline... just fun, great company, and wonderful conversation...

July 13-20, 2005 - Trip to Maine
The Shadow Lady and I flew to Maine as close to my mom's birthday as our schedules would allow, so that my Mom could see first hand how wonderful she is, and to introduce my family to the woman of my dreams...

July 2-4, 2005 - Celebrating the 4th
I celebrated the 4th of July with the "Shadow Lady" and her family.  They throw a family BBQ, along the lines of their Memorial Day celebrations... We had a great time with her family, we went on a fantastic drive down the coast together, and we spent a nice time watching the fireworks together... it was a GREAT holiday!

Celebrating the 4th

2005.06.18 - Sunset in Westport
We went to Westport to check out the sunset, and to get a basket of oysters from 'the source', my name for a otherwise nondescript Drive In food stand that delivers the best oysters in the area, in my humble opinion.

2005.06.17 - Interleague Baseball
A warm June evening, the roof open, Jamie Moyer on the mound, and wonderful company to spend the game with... you'd be hard pressed to find a better way to spend a Friday!

2005.06.16 - ANOTHER Fire Drill
We must not have done well enough earlier, because only a couple of months after the last one, we were hit with another fire drill...

2005.06.11 - Tacoma Rainier's
On Saturday, the 'Shadow Lady' and I went to a Tacoma Rainier's game on an invite by a co-worker friend of ours, along with his wife and 3 great kids, all fellow fans of THE GAME... It was destined to be a great night!

2005.06.05 - Special Olympics
We (the The Shadow Lady and I) the  helped out with the Special Olympics on Sunday Afternoon... it was a lot of fun!

Of course, I had my camera, and of course, I took pictures...

2005.05.30 - Memorable Memorial Day
I was invited to share Memorial Day with the amazing family of the other half of the Shadow Pictures... It was an opportunity for me to meet more of her family, and for them to meet me.

I had one of the best memorial days I remember having...

A Memorial Day to Remember

2005.05.21 - Multnomah Falls
Since we were already down that way, we decided that instead of rushing back up for a baseball game - the original plan, it would be more fun to relax for a bit in the tranquil beauty of the Columbia River Gorge, and drink in the views offered up by Multnomah Falls...

2005.05.21 - CVO Open House
To help commemorate the 1980 Eruption of Mt St Helens, the Cascade Volcano Observatory held an open house... Three things were surprising to me... First, there were so many people were there; Second, there was so much information on display; and Third, that the company of someone who is interested enough in YOU to go to something 'less than interesting' can be so enjoyable!

CVO Open House

2005.05.05-7 - San Diego 2005-1
Since the other half of the "Shadow Pictures" was on a business trip that ended on a Thursday, we decided to take advantage of the situation, and I went down to check out a few of the highlights - Sea World, the Zoo, and the USS Midway... lots of activity for two days!

San Diego 2005-1

2005.04.28 - 'Wild Symetra'
Redmond is a fairly large town, but on various company campuses around town, there's ample greenery to support some critters who've taken advantage of the 'nice tasting grass' and other plants, all put out there, as if for a buffet...

Symetra's campus has been "targeted for development" by a family of rabbits... they're getting more and more common...
