2004.10.06 - Nature in Olympia
< Back to Currently

I went for a short walk along Olympia's historic waterfront, mostly to get some pictures of the 4th Avenue Bridge... what I got was a reminder that Olympia is a bit closer to nature than people would think!

The Salmon are running up this way... the Deschutes is beginning to fill up with Coho's making their way to the watersheds within Olympia and Tumwater to lay their eggs...

Of course, the local seals know they're coming too... so they're here, too... its sad, in a way, but its also fun to watch them hunt the fish, and play with each other.

While I was watching, two seals tussled for a bit over a particularly large one...

I also spotted two bald eagles eating a salmon they had caught... I noticed the one on the upper left when it swooped over the bridge, and took one...

People ask me periodically why I like living in Olympia... That's an easy one!  You wouldn't see anything like this in Seattle!
