| 2004.04.17 - A Saturday In Seattle | ||

It was a nice Saturday, which was lucky, because I had made some plans
for the day, and had been anxiously awaiting its arrival.
Not long after breakfast, I fired up the truck, and took a trip to Seattle to spend a day. It was a beautiful day, and the view from I-5 of Seattle was outstanding! I couldn't resist taking a picture of Safeco Field as I went by... |

The first stop was at the Aquarium... I have an annual
membership there, because I enjoy it so much...
|
|
|
A wild harbor seal sits outside the aquarium... He's sitting on the
entrance to the fish ladder... maybe he's scouting out the good spots
for the Salmon run this fall.... I went straight into the outside Tidal Zone display, where typical animals from the Pacific Northwest's Tide Pools can be found. |

These birds, a local duck and for some reason a Puffin (which are found in Maine), were quite entertaining as they swam for small fish that had been tossed in the tank.

Down in the "Bubble", I had a great view... the sun cut down through the
water, and I had an excellent view of the fish. The
"Bubble" is an underwater viewing area, situated under a dock at the
aquarium. The area is fenced in to keep the fish from wondering
off, but its an excellent way to view the animals that populate the
Sound. While I was there, divers came in and gave us a briefing of the day's fish feeding activities |

I watched a feeding of the seals, which is done in view of the public, which lets the aquarium tell the observers about these fantastic animals.

A seagull takes advantage of the feeding to catch fish before they make it to the seals... it was pretty good at it, actually. |

On the way out, I stopped by the Otter tank. Its fun to watch those guys play around!
|
Once back outside, I took a picture of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, which was
heavily damaged by the 2000 Nisqually Quake. They fixed it, but
its slowly tipping over now, because its foundation was eroded in the
quake. Plans are in the works to replace it, probably with a
tunnel.
Its not a very long walk from there to SAFECO FIELD, home of the Seattle Mariners! I had tickets, so you can bet I was there EARLY! |

The Texas Rangers were in town, sans Alex... what better excuse do
you need???
Jamie Moyer pitched... he's my favorite pitcher on the Mariners... he pitches slow, in the mid 60's, believe it or not... |

I sat fairly close to the field, and enjoyed a great view.

| There's just something about being at the game that makes it more enjoyable... |

Moyer is a master of "Slop". He doesn't throw hard, so
he plays the corners, and relies on a lot of movement.
Here, a slider dies behind the plate, but it had passed
through the strike zone, according to the Umpire. Ichiro gets ready to slap one out of the infield...

The grounds crew dances a jig every so often... I were lucky enough to be in on one... it was great fun!

Jamie pitched a brilliant game... you can see the ball just
after he threw it... the whitish line next to the foot of
the guy in the dugout on the left of the picture. The throw was a bit low, but Olerud managed to keep control of it, and the runner was out by a mile. |

Ichiro, just before he knocks one for a base hit... I thought I had a picture of him breaking for second for a steal, but I clicked a split second too early. The throw went passed the second baseman, and Ichiro went on to third, and eventually scored. |

Olerud scoops up the throw, while Ichiro was JUST beat. It was a beautiful Spring night for baseball... and it was a great game, to match!
